The Girl in the Spider's Web- David Lagercrantz

Sigh.. I'm being SO generous with 2 stars.

What a disappointment. I didn't expect much because come on, these things never go well, but I was so hopeful. I LOVE Lisbeth Salander and was excited to hear more about what she's been up to and have her use her awesome skills for justice. She MAKES these books and sadly, she was hardly in this book. What?! Yes, it's absolutely crazy. The Millennium series is one of my all time favorites. I know that it was a lot to live up to, but Lagercrantz didn't even come close.

First, I want to start off saying that this will definitely be a spin-off trilogy, not just one book. It has to be, because more than half of this book, was just character introductions and set up for the future. I cannot tell you how much I was bored with all the extreme character information. I'm not kidding. You get all this background and irrelevant information about characters that even die. I don't care. All I wanted was to be reading about Lisbeth and her awesomeness. I mean, I would even settle for Blomkvist too. He just seemed so different and not the same person from the previous books. There is no one more important than Lisbeth. The cover even says, "A Lisbeth Salander novel." Yet, she wasn't hardly anywhere to be found.

Back to the plot. It was just so boring to me. I'm a third of the way through this book and nothing has really happened. I kept thinking that the ending would just get better, right? Something amazing would happen to make me forgive 3/4's of this book. Nope. Lame and really not all that interesting. Honestly, I don't even know what the author was trying to do with this book.
The writing is just not there. Lagercrantz isn't even on the same plane as Larsson's books. I would not be surprised if he didn't even read the first three books. I mean, I'm sure he did but it doesn't seem like it.

It was so much set up that it was too much. I will say that maybe a whole chapter could be Lisbeth's part in this book. This author breaks up a chapter and has a lot of different characters in them. There was too much hacker lingo. Don't get me wrong, it's a huge part of most of this book I'm not a hacker. So all this extreme amount of information was just overkill. I felt my eyes glazing over and just zoning out. I'm pretty sure this book was about AI intelligence and it got away. Someone has it and will take over the world.. blah blah blah. Is that all that authors think of this day and age? AI? Larsson had deep, meaningful plots and that's what I loved about him. He could write a 2,000 page book and I wouldn't want to put it down. I mean, some of his previous books were pretty long and I devoured them. I had to force myself to finish this book.  Oh yeah, this is also about a boy that is a savant. He was more of a main character than Lisbeth. Okay, okay, you get my point. I'll stop saying it already.

Another thing that I hated. Wasp being defined by Marvel. ARE. YOU. KIDDING. ME?!?! I always figured it to the fact that she was small and loved to take her time and then strike fast. She would strike so fast that you wouldn't even know it until it was too late. I mean, like a wasp, ya know?! Now, all this Marvel stuff was just annoying. Not everything in this world has to be about Marvel.

Overall, this was just not a good book. Even if I didn't know anything about the previous books, it would still be bad. It was just so slow and boring. The author took so many liberties with changing things that it doesn't even seem like it's connected to the series. I will not be reading the next one..

Why Not Me? @MindyKaling

Warning: I have a slight obsession with MK. I will do my best to not be too biased.

I read her first book and I believe that is when I started to follow Mindy Kaling. I then watched the first episode of The Mindy Project and I was in love. This book was fantastic. It was also my first audiobook! I usually cannot stand to use audiobooks because I can't concentrate enough to just listen. I absolutely had to listen to this book because I knew that Mindy reading it would just add something else to this book. Oh boy, was I right. Her reading this really put this book over the top. I couldn't stop. It followed me around everywhere. I would play it when I was washing dishes, doing the laundry and even hooked it up to my Bluetooth for my showers. It was like I was living in a world where Mindy's humor and stories followed me around everywhere for two days.  I am so glad that I listened to the audiobook, instead of reading the book. So thank you Mindy, for breaking my audiobook virginity. I didn't think it would ever happen!

This book was much better for me than her last. Don't get me wrong, her last book was good but this one is great. I love how open she is about her work and her life. She can be real and then throw in a joke like it's not a second thought. It's one of the reasons I love, The Mindy Project, so much. She knows how to add all these lines but make it flow, like it's so natural. I can't tell you the number of times that she made me laugh. Really, I had such a hard time not waking my husband up from my laughter. I like how she doesn't hold back and tells you what she really thinks. It's like she has no filter when it comes to certain things. I think one of my favorite chapters was her explaining her relationship with BJ. If you are looking for a great and fun read, this is for you. If you are just obsessed with Mindy, this is definitely for you.

Excerpt:
ONE

friends & enemies

"So, what do you say, white rabbit?” Konstantin Black asked. “Friends?”
He sat on the stool next to me, his gaze unwavering. His thick eyebrows arched hopefully above the dark silver of his eyes, and the coal-black waves of his hair fell over his face as he tilted toward me.
All I could do was gape at him, too stunned to think or move. I didn’t even know if he was really there or not. It would make more sense that I had unknowingly passed out in a random diner in Missouri and I was suffering from a stress- induced nightmare or possibly a lysa.
There was no way that Konstantin could be here with me. Not after I’d spent five days on the run from Doldastam after being arrested for treason and accused of murdering the Skojare Prince Kennet BiĆ¢else and my friend Kasper Abbott.
I’d done everything in my power to stay under the radar—I
only used cash and a burner phone, and I hadn’t even built up the nerve to actually use the phone and call anyone back home yet. I moved constantly and stayed off the grid in dive motels in small towns.
There was no possible way that anyone could’ve found me, not even Konstantin Black.
“Bryn?” Konstantin asked, since I’d done nothing but stare at him for the past minute.
Then, because I had to be sure he was real, I reached out and touched him, pressing on the black leather jacket covering his bicep, and he looked down at my hand in bewilderment. I half expected the coat to give way and him to disappear in a puff of smoke, but instead I felt the firmness of his muscle underneath.
“Are you feeling all right?” He looked back at me with what appeared to be genuine concern in his eyes, but I wasn’t sure if I could trust him. “You really look like death warmed over.”
“That’s how you’re going to sell the idea of friendship? By telling me I look awful?” I asked dryly.
Not that he was wrong. I wasn’t sleeping or eating much, so I was even paler than normal. My attempts at dyeing my hair black to help mask my identity left my normally blond waves an odd gray color, since dye never really took hold in troll hair. The swelling around my left eye had finally gone away, but the bruise had shifted to a putrid yellow color that I wasn’t able to cover completely with makeup.
“I’m selling it with brutal honesty,” he said with a wry smile. “I want you to know that you’ll get nothing but the truth from me.”
I scoffed. “There’s no way in hell I’m gonna believe that.” “Come on, Bryn. Try me.” He rested his forearms on the
counter, almost pleading with me.
“What are you even doing here? What do you want with me?” I demanded.
“I already told you—friendship.”
I rolled my eyes. “Bullshit. Everything is always bullshit with you.”
“How can you say that?” Konstantin shot back, incredulous. “I’ve been nothing but honest with you.”
“Sure, sure. You’ve been nothing but honest when you at- tempted to murder my dad or when you tried to kidnap Linnea.”
He pressed his lips into a thin line. “I already apologized about what happened with your dad.” I glared at him. “Not that anything I say will ever make that okay, but you know that I regret it.”
“How can I know that?” I shook my head. “I don’t really know anything about you.”
“Why are you being so combative?” Konstantin asked, his voice getting louder. “I’m only trying to help.”
“You’re a traitor who’s been working with someone that nearly killed me!” I yelled back, not caring how loud I was being in the small diner.
“Yeah, well, right back at you!” Konstantin shouted.
The waitress came over, interrupting our heated conversation, and set down in front of me the iced tea I’d ordered. She stood with her hand on her hip, eyeing us both with suspicion. Before, she’d looked at me with concern despite her weariness, but with my bad dye job and Konstantin’s agitation, it had to be obvious we were on the run.
“Is everything okay here?” she asked, her eyes flitting back and forth between the two of us.
“Yeah, it’s fine,” Konstantin replied curtly without looking at her.
“Well, you better keep your voices down, before you start upsetting the customers,” she said with a slight Southern drawl, and she slowly turned and walked away.
Konstantin waited until after she had gone to the other end of the diner before speaking. “And I tried to save Linnea.” He sat up straighter, indignant. “I did save her, actually. Without my intervention, she’d most likely be dead.”
From what Linnea had told me, that sounded true enough. Since I couldn’t argue with Konstantin, I turned the stool away from him and focused on my iced tea.
He sighed, then he leaned toward me, and in a voice just above a whisper he said, “I know what you’re going through. Four years ago, I was almost exactly where you are. I know how frightening and lonely it feels when the kingdom turns against you.”
I took a drink from my tea and didn’t say anything, so he went on. “You and I have been on opposite sides for a while,
and I’ve made a lot of wrong choices. But I’m trying to make up for them, and . . . now I’m alone, and you’re alone. So I thought we could be alone together.”
He leaned back away from me. “But I won’t force this. If you wanna go through this all alone, then be my guest. Take on the world by yourself. I won’t fight you.” He reached into his pocket and tossed a few dollars on the counter. “The drink’s on me.”
I heard the stool creak as he got up, but I didn’t look back. Not until I heard the door chime did I turn to watch him walking out the door, into the bright spring day. In a few more seconds he’d be gone, and I’d have no way to contact him or find out what he knew.
So even though I wasn’t sure exactly how this friendship thing would play out, or even if this wasn’t some kind of trick, I knew what I had to do. I cursed under my breath, and then I jumped off the stool and ran out after Konstantin.

TWO

tracking

"Where are we going?” I asked. It might have been a better question to ask before I’d gotten in the black Mustang with Konstantin, but I hadn’t wanted him to leave without me. And did it really matter where we were going? I had no place to be. No place to call home.
“I don’t know.” He glanced in the rearview mirror, watching the diner disappear behind us as he sped down the high- way. “Do you have somewhere in mind?”
I shook my head. “No.” Then I looked over at him. “But we should find someplace where we can really talk.”
“How about a motel?” he suggested, and when I scowled at him, he laughed. “If I was going to murder you, I would’ve done it already, and if I was just looking to get laid, believe me when I say there are easier ways to do it than this.”
“Why don’t you come out with it right now? I think a talk is long overdue.”
He smirked. “You sound so menacing.”
I looked out the window, watching the lush greenery as we sped by it. Even with me moving all over as a tracker, it was always jarring to go from the harsh cold of Doldastam to the bright warmth of anywhere else. Home was so far away, and this felt like a whole other world.
“How did you find me?” I asked, still watching the full ash trees that lined the side of the road.
“It was actually quite simple,” he said, and I looked back at him. He reached into the pocket of his leather jacket and pulled out a blond lock of hair held together with a thread.
Hesitantly, I took it from him. It was a pale golden color, with a subtle wave to it—exactly how my hair looked before I destroyed it with the bad dye job. This was my hair.
And all the pieces suddenly fell together. How Konstan- tin had been able to find me no matter where I was, like the hotel room in Calgary, or outside of Storvatten when I’d captured him. Even when he’d visited me in the lysa before.
Konstantin had been a Kanin tracker, from a long line of trackers, and thanks to his strong bloodline, he’d had a power- ful affinity for it. Like many trackers, he had the ability to imprint onto a changeling if he had something from them— a lock of hair usually worked best.
It turned the changeling into a kind of homing beacon. Konstantin couldn’t read minds, but he could sense extreme emotions in the trackee that meant they were in trouble. The
recent events in Doldastam, along with my general fear and anxiety the last few days, would’ve turned me into a megawatt searchlight.
And Konstantin had been tracking me.
“Where did you get this?” I asked, twisting the hair between my fingers.
Like all trolls, changelings are born with a very thick head of hair, and a lock of hair is taken from them before they’re placed with a host family. That way a tracker could find them later.
But I’d never been a changeling, and this hair felt much coarser than my hair had as a child. This had been taken recently.
“Why do you even have it?” I turned to look at him. “Why were you tracking me?”
He opened his mouth, then closed it and exhaled deeply through his nose. “That is a question that’s best answered when we get to the motel.”
“What? Why?” I sat up in the seat, putting my knee underneath me so I could face him better and defend myself if I needed to. “What’s happening at this motel you keep bringing up?”
“Calm down.” He held a hand out toward me, palm out. “You’re already getting worked up, and I think when I start telling you things, you’ll get even more worked up, and I’ve had enough fights in a car to know that it’s better if we wait until we’re someplace that isn’t flying seventy miles per hour down the road to have a heated conversation.”
His explanation sounded reasonable enough, so I relaxed a bit and settled back in the seat.
“For being on the run, this seems like a rather conspicuous and expensive choice of car,” I commented, since that seemed like a safe topic.
“Conspicuous, maybe. Expensive, no,” he said. “I kind of stole it.”
“You really know how to keep a low profile,” I muttered. “Hey, I kept a low profile for four years. I know a thing or two,” he insisted. “And I used persuasion, so it’s not exactly like that owner is gonna report it to the police.”
Persuasion was a psychokinetic ability trolls had where they could make people do what they wanted using a form of mind control. From what I knew about Konstantin, his ability wasn’t strong enough to work on other trolls, but humans were much more susceptible to that kind of thing. So Konstantin probably hadn’t had to try that hard to convince the human to part with his muscle car.
“So who exactly are you on the run from?” I asked. “Other than the Kanin, of course.”
He hesitated, and his grip tightened on the steering wheel. “Viktor DĆ„lig and his men.”
“But I thought you were like Viktor’s right-hand man or something. How’d you end up on the outs?”
“I told you back in Storvatten, when I was in the dungeon. I didn’t want to get any more blood on my hands. That’s why I warned Linnea. I wanted to make things right.” He shifted in the seat. “And as you can imagine, that didn’t exactly sit well with Viktor. I’d been on his shit list ever since I convinced him not to kill you.”
“Thank you for that, by the way,” I told him softly.
“You weren’t supposed to get hurt.” He glanced over at me, his eyes pained for a moment. “You weren’t supposed to be down there.”
While Linnea had still been missing in Storvatten, I had snuck down to the dungeon where Konstantin was being held to find out what he knew. I was desperate to find Linnea. But instead I’d interrupted Viktor helping Konstantin make his escape.
To prevent me from stopping them or telling anyone, Viktor had bashed my head against a wall repeatedly. Viktor had wanted me dead, but I’d suspected that Konstantin had intervened to save my life.
Still, I had a gash under my hairline to show for it. It had required six stiches, though it was nearly healed. The worst part of the injury was the vision in my right eye would get wonky sometimes, especially if I hit my head or somebody punched me.
“So why did Viktor finally kick you out?” I asked, changing the subject.
He shook his head. “Viktor didn’t. Besides, he doesn’t kick anyone out. Once you’ve served your purpose, you’re dead.” He shot me a sidelong glance. “You remember what happened to Bent Stum.”
“You left, then?” I asked.
“Yeah. I’d finally had enough of it.” He breathed deeply.
“Viktor doesn’t care about anything but revenge. A lot of innocents are gonna die. And I couldn’t be a part of it anymore, and I didn’t know how to stop it.”
I swallowed hard and sank lower in the seat. Konstantin hadn’t really said anything that I didn’t already know, but hearing it aloud didn’t make it any easier to take.
Even if I were back in Doldastam, I wasn’t sure how much I could do to help, but at least I would be able to fight along- side my friends—Ridley, Tilda, Ember—to protect the town filled with people I cared about.
Now I was trapped so far away from them. They were up against the worst thing ever to hit Doldastam, and I was powerless to help them.

3.5 Stars
I want to thank St. Martin's Press for reaching out to me to read and review this book. I was given a copy of the book through netgalley. I'm also part of the blog tour and it's the second one I've done for them.

I really enjoyed this series. All three books have beautiful covers and these were all published in the same year! That's no easy feat but it was pretty awesome. I really like Amanda Hocking and have read a couple of her other series. This one was such a fun world. The writing was great and there was so much detail to help you have a vivid image in your head.

Even though, I liked this series, this book was a bit of a let down for me. It was fun and definitely a good read but I have some issues...

*****WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!!*****

First, is Konstantin Black. REALLY?! So, he and Bryn have to pretty much partner up for most of this book. He's an awesome character and you will love him. The downside to that is that I think maybe Hocking started to wonder if she made a mistake with the love interest? I mean, for the first two books Bryn is completely in love with Ridley, which is great. I don't always need a love triangle. It's refreshing to not have one these days. Anyways, then in this third book, you totally feel it. You can tell that Konstantin and Bryn have feelings for each other and it's so obvious that he's fallen in love with her. I actually think that Bryn has fallen in love with him too but just ignores it. Then within about 5 pages, they kiss and it's amazing, but then he dies. What?! I mean, she could have just said.. I'm in love with Ridley.. Hocking didn't have to kill him! He added so much to this book! At some points, I was even rooting for him. I felt like the connection in this book was not with Ridley at all. I felt like Bryn and Ridley were siblings and the actual love interest was with Konstantin. So sad because he is actually my favorite character. I liked him more than Ridley.

Secondly, is the ending. This was a fast read. There is a lot that is going on and it keeps you really interested in the story. As I'm about 70% of the way through, I kept wondering how this was going to wrap up. This book has so much set up and the conclusion happens so fast. I mean they are at the battle and won in just a handful of pages. I feel like the author had a page limit and then just hurried up the ending. I didn't feel satisfied because I felt completely rushed. It was an okay ending and I guess I'm okay with how it all wrapped up. Well minus the fact about Konstantin.

I think that Hocking did an amazing job with all the supporting characters. I really loved Ember and her letters in this book. Those letters were a great way to keep her story going throughout this book, even though Bryn wasn't there. I also really liked Finn and Tilda. Even some of the characters that Bryn meets for a short time are great. They all add so much to this series and I think that's why these books are so fun to read. I never got bored because there was always someone new or something going on.

Overall, this is a fun read. I would recommend this series to anyone who wants something similar to the Trylle world. Bryn is a great character and I think many will really like her. She's your typical heroine but she isn't whiny. I really liked her and I did like the fact that there wasn't a love triangle. Well until the last book.

Among the Ten Thousand Things by Julia Pierpont

I want to thank Netgalley and Random House Publishing Group for a copy of this book to review. My thoughts and my opinions are my own.

This book had so much promise and started out with a bang then it fell apart.
Deb’s kids receive a box, intended for her, from Jack’s girl on the side. Kay is trying to hide it from her mom but once her brother sees it, he shows Deb immediately. So this is a story about Jack’s affair and the fallout from it. The author breaks it up into four different parts. After I read the first part, I was completely hooked. It was just so good and I wanted to know more. Then I was completely bored and looking for some kind of resolution throughout the rest of the book.

It’s written really well. The author really does have some talent but her story just didn’t flow. It got boring and dull. What on earth was the point of hearing about Jack’s visit to his mother? It took away from the story. If you like to read books where you are so interested and then get absolutely no resolution, this is it. This book just tells the story of what happens after the fallout and that is it. You don’t get to wrap anything up. The characters are just selfish and so lost. To me all of them were so unlikable. Jack just wanted to pretend like this was a thing that happened and it was no big deal. Really, lame. Deb is just lost and I don’t know what she was thinking about spending so much time with Gary. If it wasn’t for Kay interrupting, you know what would have happened. I get she’s upset and all but come on!
I don’t understand all the good reviews and that it was funny. I must have missed something because I didn’t think it was funny at all. I didn’t think this was a complete story, I felt like something was missing. A very unsatisfactory middle and ending to this book.

I was hoping for so much more and maybe that is why I was disappointed.

The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly- Stephanie Oakes

17185496

Ahhh.. So my co-worker (Teen librarian) asked me to read this. She has tons of books that she reads and sometimes asks me to help read some. This one sounded interesting enough but it has been sitting on my table for a couple months. I just got my glasses, so I picked it up today and jumped in!

Wow. I have honestly never read anything like this before. Never. I could not put this down. I literally sat at my couch and didn't move for almost 3 hours. This book is fantastic. While reading this book, I kept having flashes of Orange is the New Black. lol Maybe that's all I will think about now with books that take place in prison. Well sorta.

Anyways, Minnow has grown up a bit differently than most. She was forced to move into the wilderness to follow a "Prophet" when she was five years old. She grows up there never quite believing and always questioning. There are some really unfortunate things that happen in this "cult" group. She ends up losing her hands by her own father. It AMAZES me the lengths people will go to, to follow a leader. Who chops off their daughters hands just because the leader says that's what should be done? Don't you need to take a minute and rethink things? I don't think that God would ever condemn this kind of behavior. Not only that but murder is definitely a NO. Anyways, I'm not going to get all religious. Now, let me tell you the reasons I love this book.

I honestly, still don't completely understand why she did what she did to Philip. I have an idea but maybe I'm wrong. It's something that you can just ponder, I guess. The Minnow you see at the beginning of the book is a completely different by the end. The transformation this girl goes through, is outstanding. The way this girl has picked herself up from the horrible things she's had to face is impressive.  Then to rethink everything and even make the decision to take a hold of her own future. To learn how to think for herself. To be thrust into a new world and know nothing. To think that the boy she loves is dead then finds out he isn't. Jude.. oh Jude. How I'm still wondering if he will make it.

I don't know about you but this author had some amazing moments in this book that completely grab you. When Jude is telling Minnow about his mother, when he finds her after she's lost her hands, when they meet face to face when she's in prison and when she sees the doctor one more time before her parole hearing. The way that Stephanie Oakes writes, will completely take a hold of you. They are such powerful moments and they stay with you. It's really a talent.

All the characters in this book are fantastic. I loved them all and I really think that Angel was the perfect person for Minnow. She took her under her wing and watched out for her. Not only that, she taught her how to think for herself. Even Benny, the guard was a great character.

I can go on and on. Really, this is just a great book and you should definitely read it!

I want to thank Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book to review.

I was a bit disappointed. The reviews and my review do not add up at all. There are so many people that really liked this book but I just thought it was .. okay.

It really started out strong. I was really wrapped up into the story and got about 40% of the way through before I started to get a bit bored. The writing style was different and I'm not sure that I liked it so much. It was either that or I got a really bad ebook version. There were a lot of random letters/equations/ramblings in the middle of paragraphs. I'm not going to judge too harshly about that because I'm not sure if it was just the ebook I received.

Right away, you know this is going to be a typical YA love story. From first sight she's already smitten. Of course, she is. Although, with her living in a bubble all her life, I'm not that surprised. I really liked Olli's character at the beginning. I mean, we really don't learn much about SCID. Really, this girl just lives in white. I mean everything is white. That's pretty much all I get from it. There are some serious plot holes in this book! For example: She knows that she has this disease and then she runs off with her boyfriend?! I mean what about the nurse?! She should have known that she was living this way for a reason, then to throw all caution to the wind. Just so they could be alone and have sex. Not cool. What is it with these YA books lately?!

Then there is the ending. I saw it coming from the beginning. How else would this tie up really pretty with a bow on top? This was the only way that I could see it happening. So to me, it was predictable. I'm pretty good at figuring things out like this though. I missed my calling of being a PI. haha.

Anyways, this is a cute story and it was definitely worth the read. I just found a lot of issues with it and that's why it's getting the 3 stars. I was expecting a lot more from this book based on peer reviews. I just didn't see it.

What a great book! I wasn't quite sure what this was about. I saw the authors and new that I had to read it. This book is about three short stories from the authors and bonus! The bonus is that it has notes, like footnotes, about their writing methods. It's a fun thing to read/see. I don't know about you but I always wonder about those things, in regards to authors.

They have tips and that would come in handy for writers. So this would be a great book if you are a writer or if you just love the authors. I really enjoyed the short stories and this book. I'm not a writer but I really do appreciate their work. It was fun to see a little bit of behind the scenes.

Another Day - David Levithan

This is not a sequel but a companion book. The first book, I did enjoy but this book I was a bit let down. I don't know if it's because I liked "A's" point of view more or because I was expecting a sequel!

I really did like her view and it made for an interesting book but I didn't feel that a lot more was added to this book. I really feel it was just the same book over without her adding much to make this a more compelling read. Don't get me wrong, it was okay but not great.

I was just really let down because my expectations were so high. I really liked the first book. It's a fast read and it is enjoyable, If you don't have anything else to read.

P.S I Still Love You- Jenny Han

Wow. I cannot say enough good things about this series. This book was just as great as the first one. We pick up pretty much where the first book left off. Laura Jean’s sister is coming home for holiday break and so we get more of her in this book.

LJ is trying to define her relationship with Peter. They are in a place where they are unsure of what they want to call themselves. They end up making another contract for their relationship. Basically, they just want to have fun with each other and they are not allowed to break each other’s hearts. So of course, it’s foreshadowing. You know what is going to come, I mean really.

I absolutely love EVERY single character in this book! LJ is just the sweetest, nicest girl with a touch of innocence. She’s coming of age and learning about herself and her relationships. Her younger sister, Kitty, is fabulous. She adds a lot of spunk and attitude to this book. She says exactly what everyone else is thinking and doesn’t think twice about it. She has her own opinions that she voices, but she will stick up for the ones she loves, without a second thought. Their sister Margo, isn’t around much because she’s away at college but she has a huge presence. She is just always there in LJ’s mind and the way they add her into the book works. Their father is just so funny. You can tell he has his hand full with three girls but he’s a great father.

Peter… Peter… Peter.. At first you are just so unsure of what he’s doing. You can’t believe he would act that way but then once it’s all clear, you just love him more.

This book is basically about Peter and LJ finding out what they mean to each other. They go through some struggles but you just can’t help but pull for them. The ending of this book is what MAKES this book. It’s amazing and I still can’t stop thinking about it. It’s just so pure and real.

I love, love this book! I highly recommend them!

The Winner's Crime- Marie Rutkoski

I am the minority here with this rating. I loved the first book SO much. This book was not what I expected at all and a bit of a disappointment. At the same time, it was really good plot wise. If we didn't have the failed romantic issues in this book, it would have been so much better.

In this book, Kestrel and Arin are just so frustrating. Okay, maybe just stupid. I don't know. Kestrel is supposed to be so smart and cunning but when it comes to her love life, she's the complete opposite. The lack of communication and them jumping the complete opposite conclusions ASAP, was driving me insane. That is what knocked the stars off this book. So far, what they have shown me is that they cannot communicate. At. All. That's a horrible start to any relationship. Arin's pretty stupid for trying to get her to be his, when she's engaged and going to be the next Empress. Then he doesn't take the hints she's trying to give them when he's trying to confess his love again. Instead of realizing that she's in a dangerous place that they could be overheard, he ignores all her attempts and takes it as her not wanting him. Then when he lets go of the sword. What an idiot. I would rather this book have 0 romance than this. It was just annoying.

Otherwise, the secrecy and political war that Kestrel is involved in, was fascinating. At the same time, she's not using her head and strategizing correctly! She knows how the Emperor feels about Herrani and yet goes around supporting them publicly and hanging out with them. When you already have rumors going around, you have to be smarter about that! This is what I don't understand. The whole series so far, she's being pegged as this super smart strategist but when it comes to her own life, she's clueless.

The best part of this book, was when Arin and Kestrel are separated. They both shined and got things done that I don't think they could do together. They made huge strides to try and protect their people.

Also, this book is a really slow read. Even if you are trying to get through it quickly, you won't. It was just impossible and it took more much longer than I anticipated. I don't even know why. The plot was smooth and interesting. I didn't really get bored or anything but it took me a while to get through this.

The cliffhanger is crazy. I can't wait to see what happens. I'm going to hope that the next book will be just as great as the first one. This book was good but I was just disappointed.
